Caring for Your Leather Wallet

A good leather wallet gets better with age. With the right care it develops a rich patina and keeps its shape for years. These simple steps will help yours look its best.

Do not overfill it

The most common cause of a misshapen wallet is overfilling. Carry the cards you use every day and keep the rest at home. Too many cards stretch the leather and strain the stitching, and the wallet will not close neatly.

Keep it out of your back pocket

Sitting on your wallet bends the leather and wears it out much faster. It is also uncomfortable for your back. A front pocket, jacket pocket or bag is kinder to both.

Clean it gently

• Wipe the wallet with a soft, dry cloth every week or two to remove dust and surface dirt.
• For marks, use a cloth that is barely damp, then let the wallet dry naturally at room temperature.
• Never use household cleaners, alcohol or wet wipes; they strip the leather’s natural oils.

Condition it a few times a year

Leather is a natural material that can dry out over time, especially in air-conditioned rooms. Every three to six months, apply a small amount of good-quality leather conditioner with a soft cloth, working in gentle circles. Test it first on a hidden area, let it absorb, then buff away any excess.

Protect it from water and heat

If your wallet gets wet, blot it with a dry cloth and let it dry slowly at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heaters or hair dryers, which can make leather crack. During the monsoon, a zip pouch in your bag adds useful protection.

Store it properly

When you are not using a wallet, empty it, keep it in its box or a dust bag, and store it in a cool, dry place. Avoid sealed plastic bags, as leather needs to breathe.

Embrace the patina

Over time, natural leather softens and darkens where it is handled most. This patina is a sign of quality and gives every wallet its own character.
